Disability Resources for Students Studying Abroad

Global Initiatives is committed to engaging all students in study abroad opportunities. Whether you have a physical or learning disability, we can help you find a study abroad opportunity that is a good fit.

During an advising appointment we can:

  • Work closely with you to identify program options that match your interests and are best suited to accommodate your needs.
  • Help you navigate the process of requesting accommodation for your program connecting you with the Disabilities Resources for Students (DRS) office and your program directors.
  • Support you in applying for scholarships that give preference for students with disabilities.

Relevant Scholarships

Several scholarships aim to encourage more students with disabilities to go abroad:

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

  • Funded by US Congress, the Gilman program aims to bring diversity to study abroad.
  • Non-traditional destinations are preferred and programs must be at least 21 days.
  • Applicants must be US citizens, undergraduates, and be receiving a Federal Pell Grant.
  • Deadlines: October, March

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships

  • Intended to support students from underrepresented backgrounds in study abroad, the fund offers a total of 18 awards of up to $10,000 each.
  • Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
  • Study abroad programs must be a minimum of four weeks long and be academically rigorous.
  • Students may apply prior to committing to a study abroad program.
  • Deadline: January

IES Disability Grants

  • Awards are $500 to enhance study abroad opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Students should fill out the application form and email the completed applications to enrollments@IESabroad.org
  • To be eligible for any IES Abroad aid, you must apply to and attend an IES Abroad Program
  • Deadlines: November, April, May
