Information for Parents and Families

Why Study Abroad?

Increasing numbers of UW Bothell students are studying abroad each year. Study abroad is shown to be a high-impact activity that correlates positively with graduation rates and post-graduate success, by helping students develop skills such as adaptability, intercultural communication, and problem-solving.

A recent article published in Inside Higher Ed summarizes broadly reproduced research showing that students who study abroad are more likely to graduate on time. Learn more about the latest education abroad research by visiting the Center for Global Education website.

Types of Programs

A number of different study abroad program options are available that vary in location, purpose and duration. All approved programs earn academic credit towards degree completion and are eligible for financial aid and scholarships.

Financing Study Abroad

Studying abroad does require some additional costs, like airfare and international travel insurance, but it can be affordable. With advance planning, financial aid and scholarships, most students can afford to incorporate an international experience into their university education.

Here is a sample cost comparison of studying abroad vs. studying at UWB during Winter Quarter 2013. Program costs vary widely depending on duration and location.
