Minor in Mathematics

Declaring the minor

The Mathematics minor has the following prerequisites before it can be declared:

  • STMATH 124: Calculus I (5 credits)
  • STMATH 125: Calculus II (5 credits)
  • STMATH 126: Calculus III (5 credits)

STMATH 124 requires foundational knowledge in math concepts. Visit our Math Directed Self-Placement page for help determining what math course to start with.

The prerequisites must be completed (not in-progress) before declaring the minor. Once you have completed the prerequisites, contact the academic advisor for your major at any time to declare the CSSE minor.

Program requirements

  • A minimum of 25 credits must be earned for this minor (not including prerequisites)
  • A minimum of 15 credits for the minor must be earned at UW Bothell campus
  • Each course used for the minor must be completed with a grade of 2.0 or higher

Core requirements (20 credits)

  • STMATH 208: Matrix Algebra (5 credits)
  • One of the following courses:
    • STMATH 207: Differential Equations (5 credits)
    • STMATH 224: Multivariable Calculus (5 credits)
  • STMATH 300: Foundations of Modern Mathematics (5 credits)
  • One of the following courses:
    • STMATH 402: Abstract Algebra I (5 credits)

    • STMATH 424: Real Analysis I (5 credits)
    • STMATH 427: Complex Analysis (5 credits)
    • STMATH 444: Foundations of Geometry (5 credits)

Elective requirements (5 credits)

You must complete a selection of “STMATH” elective coursework, meeting the following criteria:

  • You must take at least five (5) credits (usually one course)
  • The credits must be 300-level or higher

Some Mathematics courses are restricted to students in the majors that require them for registration period 1, but become available to all students from registration period 2 onwards. You can contact the academic advisor for Mathematics for assistance with registration.

Math-related courses from UW Bothell or elsewhere that are not on the pre-approved elective lists are considered on a case-by-case basis. If you have a syllabus, letter from your instructor, or other detailed description of the class you want to use as an elective, you can submit a petition to request for the course to count.

A minimum of 15 credits used for this minor must be taken at UW Bothell, which means that a maximum of 10 credits may be taken elsewhere (including other UW campuses).
