The purpose of these minors is to provide opportunities to students from non-technical disciplines a supplement to their major with a practical set of courses focused on information technology, computer science, and software engineering. These minor will help prepare you for a variety of industrial, government and business positions involving computer use. Please read the resitrictions to ensure you can declare this minor.
Minor in Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSSE)
The CSSE minor provides students with the necessary programming and software management skills to work within a software development environment within their major discipline. Courses for the CSSE minor are programming intensive and require a strong foundational knowledge of programming skills to be successful.
Required Courses:
- CSS 132 or 142 (2.7 min.): PREREQUISITE
- CSS 133 or 143 (2.5 min.): PREREQUISITE
- CSS 342 (requires 2.8 in CSS 143 and 2.5 in STMATH 125)
- CSS 360
- Any two additional (10 credits) CSS electives, with 5 credits at the 300-level or above. The other 5 credits must be at the 200-level or above. (Business students may not take CSS 301 or CSS 350.)
- Total credits: A minimum of 30 credits with a minimum grade of 2.0 in each course, unless a higher grade in a course is specified as a pre-requisite for another course in the minor.
- Minimum of 15 credits must be completed in residence at UW Bothell campus.
Students on the Seattle and Tacoma campuses need to follow procedures for cross-campus enrollment.
Restrictions
- Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSSE) and Applied Computing (ACMPT) students may not earn the IT or CSSE minors due to the overlap in content between these majors and minors.
- Business students may not apply CSS 301 (Technical Writing) or CSS 350 (Management Principles for Computing Professionals) to any minor requirements.
- No student may receive more than one minor from the CSS program.
- Credits from CSS 332 and 497 cannot be used towards any CSS minor.
- At least 15 credits of the required coursework must be completed in residence at UW Bothell campus to earn these minors.
Declaring the CSSE minor
Admission into the IT or CSSE minors is not competitive. You may declare either minor with any advisor, provided that you have completed the prerequisites with minimum grade requirements. You may not declare a CSS minor with in-progress grades in any prerequisite courses.
Registering for classes
Important note: Due to high demand for these courses, we cannot guarantee that there will be space available for CSS minor students.

Graduating with a minor
When applying for graduation, the student's major program advisor will list the minor requirements on the graduation application. Upon graduation, the minor will be indicated on the student's transcript, but it will not appear on the diploma.
