This year six GWSS faculty, one undergraduate major, and the GWSS librarian all attended the 40th annual National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) conference. Jin-Kyu Jung leads study abroad trip to South Korea and establishes ties with local institutions
IAS faculty member Jin-Kyu Jung recently returned from South Korea with 9 UW students from the Bothell and Seattle campuses. This trip was part of an Early-Fall Student Abroad program, “Mapping Communities in the Smart City,” co-led with Gunwha Oh (affiliate faculty in IAS and lecturer in the Deptartment of Geography).

UWave Radio: ‘Your voice, your vibe’
Radio hardly describes all the media, programming, and community building that takes place through UWave Radio, the campus station. “Our students are learning the cutting edge of where digital broadcasting is going. It’s multimedia. It’s live and archived, and it’s engaging specific communities because that’s how media works,” says IAS faculty member and adviser Amoshaun Toft.

Cultural Studies Graduate Student Berette Macaulay Recognized for Research on Embodied Memory & Identity in Black Diaspora
Multidisciplinary artist, writer, and Cultural Studies graduate student Berette Macaulay has received a number of honors recognizing her scholarship recently. She was selected to present her capstone research titled “Embodied Witness” at the Tilting Axis conference on “Beyond Trend: Decolonisation and Art Criticism.” The conference was held at the Memorial ACTe Museum in Guadeloupe in June 2019. Interactive Media Design projects engage users
Interactive Media Design (IMD) students hosted a one-night pop up exhibition featuring six installations demonstrating the human-centered design process. Called Delve, the exhibition was curated by Abraham Avnisan, IAS artist-in-residence and IMD faculty, along with Rachel Raymond, a member of the junior-year cohort.

Women of Color Healing Circle wins T-Mobile grant
IAS students Gloria Giselle Gonzalez-Zapata and Nura A. Abdi founded the Women of Color Healing Circle, a space where women of color can gather to begin healing, build community, and learn to be the revolutionaries of tomorrow. At UW Bothell’s annual Equity & Inclusion Conference, their project won the Create the Change contest, a $5,000 grant to support their continued efforts.
