IAS faculty member Ching-In Chen was awarded a 2020 Course Development Grant for their Autumn 2020 course, Breathing in a Time of Disaster (BISIA 311: Creative Writing Prose), from the Center for Global Studies at the University of Washington’s Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and the East Asia Center. The grant is an extremely competitive award that recognizes innovative teaching at the UW.

This autumn, Breathing in a Time of Disaster students are exploring writings from an environmental justice and global health perspective in collaboration with Professor Yingjie Li’s Tianjin Normal University class through a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) module. The students have studied zines such as the Asian American Feminist Collective’s Asian American Feminist Antibodies [care in the time of coronavirus] as literature of self-expression and community witness and are collaborating to create cross-cultural zines about life during global pandemic times.
