IAS faculty member Mira Shimabukuro spoke twice recently about her book, Relocating Authority: Japanese-Americans Writing to Redress Mass Incarceration. The first was an interview/article published in the journal Discover Nikkei: Japanese Migrants and their Descendants . The second was a talk presented in Los Angeles at the Japanese American National Museum. Both emphasized the ways Japanese Americans used vernacular writing to respond to mass incarceration during World War II and highlighted the ways community-specific values influenced such “writing-to-redress” and the ways writing was used by women to enact a resistant collective agency under the imprisonment.
