Min Tang: Creating critical media literacy workshops
Students in IAS faculty member Min Tang’s Critical Media Literacy course developed educational workshops to share with the Northshore School District’s teachers and students. “I encourage my students to think about how power structures in a society shape the media systems and processes,” Tang said. “I want them to understand the kind of power media has in shaping our social discourses, perceptions and opinions.”

Kristina Jorgensen collaborates on legislation and receives capacity-building grant
In 2020, Kristina Jorgensen graduated from IAS with a major in Society, Ethics & Human Behavior, minor in Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies, and began her graduate education in the M.A. in Policy Studies. She is also an alum of the D.C. Seminar in Human Rights (2019). Community engagement on a global scale
Isolated at home by the pandemic, members of UW Bothell’s 2020 Global Scholars cohort said they nonetheless had a meaningful experience of global engagement. Through an inspiring book, deep discussions and remote projects with partners in different countries, they also experienced personal growth and community building. The Global Scholars program was launched by IAS faculty members Ben Gardner and Ron Krabill, along with Global Initiatives Director Natalia Dyba and Eva Navarijo, director of undergraduate advising for IAS.

Jennifer Atkinson collaborates with youth/teen climate activists
IAS faculty member Jennifer Atkinson collaborated this fall with youth theater groups and young climate writers to explore the emotional impact of our climate crisis. For the newest dramatic production created by Cry Havoc Theater Company in Dallas, Texas, Atkinson contributed a series of interviews based on her work helping students navigate eco-anxiety and climate despair. Supporting International Students course boosted by alumni
International students have unique needs and face different challenges than their counterparts. Prior to the pandemic, IAS staff members Jung Lee and Sakara Buyagawan received a UW Bothell Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement Fellowship to explore support options for international students. Their efforts, however, became urgent when the U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) placed restrictions on international students’ visitor status, due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

Brandon Washington discusses philanthropy at UW Bothell
How has work in Advancement & External Relations changed since remote operations began at UW Bothell? Brandon Washington, manager of annual giving and philanthropy, answers a few questions from Maria Lamarca Anderson, director of communications. A graduate in Media & Communication Studies (’15), Washington worked in community engagement for several years before joining UW Bothell in January 2020, and his onboarding experience has been far from normal.

Taking contamination out of community gardens
Melanie Malone, an IAS faculty member who researches contaminants in urban gardens, teamed up with community partners to test and remediate soil in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood, where residents could use some healthy produce. Malone and community partners received a Population Health Equity Research Grant to sample soil at gardens in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. It’s close to the Duwamish River Superfund site, designated for a special federal cleanup program because of a century of industrial pollution.
