Alumni discuss their careers through IAS Mentor Chats
During spring quarter, several IAS alumni met with students to share their career pathways. Called “Mentor Chats,” these conversations are intended to assist students with career exploration, job searching, networking, and learning about a range of professional trajectories. Frances Lee discusses the power of citation in activist writing
In their article “It Is Just Me, Or Does Activist Writing Need A Citational Practice?,” Cultural Studies alum Frances Lee discusses citing as an exercise of power. Says Lee, “When we fail to give credit to the authors of the ideas we are building upon, we are preventing people from being acknowledged for their gifts, and even robbing them of the ability to get paid.”

Neil Low named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
The UW Bothell Alumni Council has selected IAS alum Neil Low (’03) as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in acknowledgement of his lifetime achievements. Low is a 50-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department and author of seven detective novels. Due out this summer, his eighth book, “Crazy Love,” is a fictionalized version of the death of Kurt Cobain.

Diane Weber stays politically engaged through Democrats Abroad
After a long career in public service, IAS alum Diane Weber relocated to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For many retirees, a life of leisure ensues, but Weber’s political work keeps her quite occupied. After the 2016 election, she felt compelled to take action and joined Democrats Abroad, the official Democratic Party arm for the millions of Americans living outside the United States. Mary Howisey leads Alumni Council’s Husky 5K efforts
On Saturday, May 18, more than 1,300 walkers, strollers, joggers and runners will take to the streets of Bothell for the 14th Annual UW Bothell Husky 5k. Since the first race in 2006, proceeds from the Husky 5k have resulted in more than $160,000 for scholarships. Amber Shirk recognized as one of Tacoma’s top volunteers
Alum Amber (Monson) Shirk has always been involved in her community, but her engagement has only deepened since graduating from the M.A in Policy Studies (MAPS) program in 2017. This June, Shirk will receive a City of Destiny Award from Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards and the City Council for her contributions to the city’s economic development. Interactive art illustrates climate change
Recent graduate Vancie Fu created a senior project that still has her teachers talking. With elements of art, environmental studies, digital media and creative storytelling, Fu uses an multi-disciplinary approach to discuss climate change with her “artifact from the future.”
