Julie Shayne joins roundtable on feminist writing and publishing

The president of the Southeast Women’s Studies Association (SEWSA) invited IAS faculty member, and Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies coordinator, Julie Shayne to speak on a roundtable called “Emerging Scholars: A Writing and Publishing Roundtable Organizers.” The invitation followed Shayne’s presentation at the Gender Studies in Georgia conference last fall where she had presented on Persistence is Resistance: Celebrating 50 Years of Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies.

Shayne’s presentation, “Reflections on Feminist Writing,” traced her writing and publishing trajectory as they mirrored her professional paths. She explained how starting on the tenure track limited the way she wrote and once she found her professional home at UW Bothell, on the teaching track in IAS, free to do community-based, public scholarship, she felt she could write the way she always intended to. She concluded her presentation with what she called “advice-ish” to the emerging scholars in attendance, suggesting questions they should reflect on as they chart out their professional paths.
