land use and conservation

IAS faculty members Santiago Lopez in collaboration with colleagues from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO – Ecuador) and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg published a paper in the journal Ecological Indicators. The paper addresses land use/land cover changes in Southern Ecuador and the implications for management and conservation linked to the downsizing of a conservation area. The study shows that protected area formation and downsizing can significantly alter the spatial arrangement and size of transitional land covers, which, in turn, may affect landscape dynamics with implications for energy flow and habitat function.
