IAS alumni, faculty member, and student serve on UWAA Board of Trustees

The University of Washington Alumni Association (UWAA) has been the foundation of the UW alumni community for more than 125 years, and the UWAA Board of Trustees is a vital body of committed individuals responsible for setting the association’s tone and direction. IAS alumni serving on the Board of Trustees for the 2020-21 term include: At-large Trustee Emily Anderson (’09), University Representative Trustee David Hernandez (’03), and Geographic Trustee Tanya Kumar (’18).

Emily Anderson is Senior Director/lead privacy and security counsel at Gigamon, a network security company. She holds a B.A. in Society, Ethics & Human Behavior and law degree at Seattle University. Anderson maximized her time at UW Bothell. “As a UW student, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, served as UW Bothell student body president and chaired the campus Relay for Life club raising money for the American Cancer Society. Professors and mentors rallied around me and that was meaningful. UW Bothell cultivates a dedication to service and reflection on how best to employ your education. That contributed to my passion and perseverance in earning a law degree.”

David Hernandez works as a financial services professional for New York Life. He returned to college as an adult while working full-time, earning his B.A. in Liberal Studies. Says Hernandez, “My time at UW Bothell was life-changing. I want to give back and be an example that the Husky experience is open to people of all ages, backgrounds and spans the three campuses. The journey is more than grades and a degree. It changes you as a person in the best ways possible.”

Tanya Kumar works in Washington, D.C. for T-Mobile USA in the field of federal cybersecurity policy affairs. She credits UW Bothell in her success. “A bioethics course unlocked my passion for law and policy and that solidified when I pursued a student opportunity to attend a human rights seminar in Washington, D.C. I further developed my leadership skills by running for office and being elected UW Bothell’s student body president. UW Bothell taught me that you don’t have to follow a conventional pathway to success.”

IAS faculty member Karam Dana serves the Board of Trustees as Faculty Representative, and Gurleen Mann, a Law, Economnics & Public Policy major, serves as UW Bothell Student Forum Representative. Alum Aaron Yared, who earned a B.A. in Law, Economics & Public Policy (’18) and M.A. in Policy Studies (’19) at UW Bothell, is a current law student at UW Seattle and 2020-21 president of the Graduate & Professional Student Senate (GPSS). Yared serves as GPSS Student Forum Representative for the Board of Trustees.
