Karam Dama receives 2018 Distinguished Teaching Award

IAS faculty member Karam Dana has won the 2018 UW Bothell Distinguished Teaching Award. Dana joined IAS in 2010 and since that time has proven himself to be an outstanding and successful teacher, mentor, and colleague. He is, in the words of the award selection committee, “an exceptional teacher who progresses beyond discussing difficult social issues and challenges from unusual perspectives in the classroom to potentially transforming students with his emphasis on reciprocity, rigor, empathy and learning. His courses appear to resonate deeply with students who care about issues of social justice, fairness and equality.” Beyond the classroom, Dana has served as the faculty advisor to the Muslim Student Association, been invited to talk with K-12 teachers on issues related to the Middle East and Islam, and given many public presentations on Muslims and American politics and society, including one to the Washington State Supreme Court. Congratulations, Karam!
