Recent alum Alexa Russo (’17, Environmental Studies) was planning to be an elementary school teacher when she began her studies. While at Cascadia College, she fell in love with the North Creek Wetlands and started thinking about career options in the environmental field. After transferring to UW Bothell, she enrolled in community-based learning and research courses, volunteering for two quarters at SAgE Student Farm, and conducted a summer internship at Pacific Science Center. She also became the Student Sustainability Assistant for the UW Bothell Sustainability Office and now serves as Interim Sustainability Coordinator, finding herself at the helm of Earth Week, which runs April 16-22.

Russo feels a deep connection to the earth and appreciates the Pacific Northwest’s access to mountains, ocean, and wildlife. “What drew me to environmental studies and sustainability were all the changes I saw happening locally. We need to inspire collective action, because individual action is not enough. If all of UW Bothell works together, we can make a huge difference.” And that’s the crux of Earth Week, a collaboration between UW Bothell and Cascadia College featuring multiple events and projects.
