Julie Shayne Blogs About Her Decision to Leave the Tenure Track

IAS faculty member Julie Shayne was asked by the editor of the blog Conditionally Accepted to discuss alternative paths through academia. In her post Shayne reflects on the decision she made a full decade ago. Honestly discussing the frustrations of the academic glass ceiling, Shayne ultimately concludes that the tenure track is not for everyone, particularly when it lands you in what she calls how-the-hell-did-I-end-up-here USA. As she explains in the post, though she never planned to end up in IAS or at UW Bothell she couldn’t be happier with her round about decision making, extremely good timing, and social justice focused institutional home.
