You have a strong desire to understand how underrepresented students (i.e. students of color, low-income, first generation, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized student groups) are impacted by inequity in the American educational system. You are driven to increase equity within those learning environments. You are interested in the historical contexts of educational inequity and in learning how to increase social justice initiatives in schools or other community educational organizations.

Students who choose the Critical Educational Change and Leadership concentration are typically seeking to advance their understanding of equity issues in educational contexts. K12 educators interested in serving as equity leaders in their schools or districts find this degree useful. Additionally, educators from non-profit organizations, human resource departments, or social service agencies that want to increase equity among learning groups can benefit from this degree program.

The GRE is not required for admission. You do not need to be a teacher/teacher-certified to apply to the CECL concentration or have previous teaching experience.
Students enrolled full-time can complete the M.Ed. degree in 1 year (4 quarters), taking 2 classes per quarter. Students who opt to enroll part-time will complete the program in 2 years. Find course requirements here.
The CECL concentration accepts applicants once per year, to begin Autumn quarter. Classes are scheduled in the evening to accommodate most working students, with a majority of the courses being hybrid or fully online.
For students who complete the program in one year, tuition will cost approximately $25,282 (based on 2023-2024 Graduate Resident Tuition Rates for full-time Washington state residents). Tuition details, scholarship resources, and links to financial aid information can be found here.
