Michelle integrates wetland science, law and policy, and community engagement to further develop and refine the Wetland Program in order to preserve, protect, enhance, restore, and manage wetlands and their functions for the benefit of the Tulalip Tribes now and into the future. Michelle’s current projects include a Pre-Planted Pallet wetland restoration project, Wetland Monitoring and Assessment, and developing a Wetland Management Prioritization Plan. Prior to their work with the Tulalip Tribes, Michelle has assisted with studies on juvenile salmonid passage through dams on the Columbia River, caught rock iguanas in the Bahamas for a life history study, and served with the Washington Conservation Corps to restore riparian areas and monitor Aquatic Reserves in Puget Sound. They hold a M.S. in Biology from Western Washington University, a B.A. in Biology from Earlham College, and a certificate in Wetland Science and Management from the University of Washington. For more info on Michelle’s work see the Tulalip Tribe’s Wetland page, which has several excellent videos: nr.tulaliptribes.com/Topics/Wetlands And this news article from the Tulalip Tribe describes the reservation’s extensive wetlands: tulalipnews.com/wp/2022/05/25/celebrating-tulalip-wetlands/
- Rebecca Bramwell. Rebecca (she/they) fell in love with wetlands when she was 16 years old as a running start student at Cascadia College. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Evergreen State College in 2018, double majoring in Environmental Science and Cultural & Global Studies. Rebecca struggled to find work after college and in 2021 decided to go back to school to complete the University of Washington Wetland Science and Management certificate program, and received a scholarship from the UW Continuum College to do so. After completing the program, Rebecca worked as a Wetland Ecologist at Eastside Environmental Pros (based in Woodinville) providing environmental consulting services for single family residential development projects. In June of 2024, Rebecca started a new position with Snohomish County Public Works department in the Transportation and Environmental Services division as a Biologist. In this role, she specializes in environmental regulation compliance and mitigation design and implementation for road and bridge improvement projects that impact wetlands and streams. Rebecca also plays a lead role in managing and maintaining Little Bear Creek Advance Mitigation Site near UW Bothell to ensure the site continues to achieve its performance standards and ecological success. Rebecca enjoys that her career is a mix of working in the field in her carhartts and orange vest, often returning home covered in mud, working in the office writing technical reports and collaborating with her team, and working from home. Because of her personal experience struggling to enter this industry, she has a strong personal commitment to providing mentorship and guidance to students interested in the environmental science field. To learn more about Rebecca’s story and the UW Wetland Science and Management certificate, an article and alumni spotlight video is available at the links below: continuum.uw.edu/story/scholarship/rebecca-bramwell and youtube.com/watch?v=zn3X_BR0xA0
