Scholarship

My program of research focuses on symptom science. My long-term goal is to develop nonpharmacological interventions for pain and symptom management in persons with cancer and other chronic illnesses. My research team and I recently conducted a two-arm randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of a recorded hypnosis intervention for chronic pain relief with 109 cancer survivors at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, University of Washington Medicine Healthcare System, and the University of Illinois Cancer Center (K23NR017208-01A1). Study participants were asked to listen to the recording for 28 days. The hypnosis intervention was effective in significantly reducing pain intensity, pain interference, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. I am currently conducting a pilot study evaluating a relaxation recording for reducing test anxiety and improving heart rate variability in UW Bothell undergraduate students (Co-investigator: Dr. Bryan White, STEM). My scholarship activities also include creating evidence-based resources for symptom management through my work with the Oncology Nursing Society and serving as an associate editor for the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing.
