UW Bothell School of Nursing and Health Studies annual scholarship fund provides need and/or merit based financial support. It is a honor to congratulate Deeqa Mah, Casey Cummins, and John Masembe who are pursuing the Bachelor of Arts Health Studies.

Deeqa Mah is dedicated to her education, she shared that her parents who immigrated to the United States have instilled hard working ethnic. She is fulfilled with the Health Studies major and feels UW Bothell possesses an energy unlike any other higher education institution. She is currently volunteering as an intern for Sea Mar Community Health Center and provides health education to the intergenerational populations.

Casey Cummins is devoted to his higher education by obtaining an associate’s degree and transferred to UW Bothell to pursue health studies major and prepare for medical school. Parallel to his studies on health populations; he shadows physicians from rural settings and free clinics. These experiences has given him a humble and altruism perspective of the health care needs for the underserved populations.

John Masembe wholeheartedly expressed his deep commitment, he says it best, and “my experiences reshaped my purpose in life. Health care goes beyond just a college major, it’s my calling. I want to be in a position where I can implement the kind of change that will touch lives and help overcome obstacles inflicted by health, race, gender, socioeconomic and even immigration status. I want to be a voice for people with disabilities and those that struggle within our public health systems.” In addition, in order for him to complete his major and support his family, he works. His major and skills qualified him to work at Swedish hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which gives him a step up to his health career goals in the near future.

The Health Studies program allow the students to experience a health career(s) and health equity practices which will allow them to become future leaders in the health and health care system.
