Study abroad paves way for Peace Corps job

A UW Bothell study abroad trip to Togo in 2014 helped Alexandra Winters understand the challenges of international work. Many of the lessons — flexibility, intercultural communication and community advocacy — translated into Peace Corps service.

Veteran alumnus on State Department fellowship

Thanks to a timely notice from UW Bothell, Ryan Dzakovic won a Veterans Innovation Partnership fellowship for a year-long position with the State Department’s Office of Global Partnerships in Washington, D.C. Dzakovic (master’s cultural studies ’15) is an Army reservist who served in Iraq and Uganda.

With 1,000 American flags on the promenade and a Veterans Day reception at the North Creek Events Center, the University of Washington Bothell honored military veterans. Chancellor Wolf Yeigh also has announced a new veterans center in Founders Hall (UW1).

Cruz Garibay wins Fulbright award

UW Bothell graduate Cruz Garibay, who grew up in an immigrant family in Yakima and was the 2015 UW Homecoming King, won a 2018 Fulbright grant to Brazil. The fifth UW Bothell recipient of a U.S. student Fulbright award, Garibay will work as an English teaching assistant at a university.

Successful fundraiser for Anna Bui endowment

About 200 people attended a fundraiser in Mukilteo, Washington, that brought in nearly $41,000 for the Anna Bui World of Hope Scholarship at the University of Washington Bothell. With previous donations, the endowment fund now has nearly $59,000 to support study abroad experiences for other students in memory of 19-year-old Bui who was killed last summer shortly after traveling in Europe for three weeks.

Alumni weekend’s run and fun

The Husky 5K on the University of Washington Bothell’s Alumni Weekend drew 800 runners and raised $17,000 for student scholarships. The Bothell Block Party and Brewfest on the afternoon of May 20 drew 2,500 people to enjoy beer, food and live bands.

All four of Peter and Julie Becker's children have attended the University of Washington campus in their hometown. Over the past decade, brothers Jack, Nick and Joe have graduated from UW Bothell, and this year their sister Molly takes the walk in cap and gown.

Lawyer, philanthropist to receive UW Bothell’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award

Stephen Ssemaala, a political refugee from Uganda who graduated from the University of Washington Bothell and the UW School of Law is the recipient of the 2017 UW Bothell Distinguished Alumni Award. Ssemaala is honored for distinguished professional achievements and outstanding community service. The award was established in 2000, and the winner is selected by the UW Bothell Alumni Council.
