Lawyer, philanthropist to receive UW Bothell’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award

Stephen Ssemaala, a political refugee from Uganda who graduated from the University of Washington Bothell and the UW School of Law is the recipient of the 2017 UW Bothell Distinguished Alumni Award. Ssemaala is honored for distinguished professional achievements and outstanding community service. The award was established in 2000, and the winner is selected by the UW Bothell Alumni Council.

The announcement that a third collision of black holes has been detected three billion light years away validates the work of hundreds of scientists, including Joey Shapiro Key, assistant professor of physics at the University of Washington Bothell. The discovery was made using a detector located at Hanford in eastern Washington.

Military veterans and their families were honored at a challenge coin and stole ceremony Tuesday in advance of the students’ graduation from the University of Washington Bothell. Chancellor Wolf Yeigh gave a coin to each veteran, in the military tradition of carrying custom minted coins, symbolic of unit spirit and pride.
