University of Washington Bothell has named Monroe Schools Superintendent Fredrika Smith the 2016 Distinguished Alumna of the Year. Smith, who goes by “Deka,” earned her bachelor’s degree in the liberal studies program in 1994 and reconnected with the University as a lecturer six years ago in the Leadership Development for Educators master’s program.

Students have a hit at business pitch
A team co-led by a University of Washington Bothell student Adam Zhu won a $2,500 award in the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship business plan competition. The Aquapel team won the Smukowski Family Best Sustainable Advantage award that goes to the best sustainable product at the UW’s Foster School of Business competition.

The University of Washington Bothell celebrates its 25th graduating class with the biggest commencement exercise in the University’s history. About 1,300 of the 1,800 spring grads are participating in the ceremony June 12 at UW Seattle’s Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

Borsuk, Carlisle the 2016 Worthington scholars
Amaranth Borsuk and Shauna Carlisle are the winners of the 2016 Worthington Distinguished Scholar awards. Both are assistant professors in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. ‘Aromathematics’ in Discovery Hall
A sculpture created with herbs and spices has been completed, but the aroma will linger until May 27 in the fourth-floor vista of Discovery Hall at University of Washington Bothell. Powdered pentagons are arranged on the floor in the pattern discovered by UW Bothell mathematicians Jennifer McLoud-Mann, Casey Man and David Von Derau.

University of Washington Bothell will have 117 students studying abroad this summer and early fall -- the most popular time for students to study abroad.Currently, 8.5 percent of UW Bothell undergraduates study abroad, which is below the national average of about 10 percent. Perfect day for alumni 5K, block party
Nearly 650 people ran or walked in the 11th annual 5K, and more than 1,000 took part in the second annual block party and brewfest. Spring weather was perfect May 7, and together the alumni weekend events raised about $12,000 for student scholarships.

Math-art display taking shape in herbs, spices
Sculptor Stephen Watson started creating a unique work of art and math Wednesday as he sprinkled herbs and spices on pentagon-shaped pieces of Plexiglas and arranged them in the pattern discovered by University of Washington Bothell mathematicians.
