Savoring Spices and Surprises: A Whirlwind Adventure through McDonald’s and Bustling Roads

Boeing headquarters building in India

Today, we visited the Boeing India Engineering and Technology Centre (BIETC) and Wipro. These two companies, along with all the companies we visited earlier this week, welcomed us with open arms and treated us to an abundance of refreshments, insights, and goodwill. Even our hotel staff and tour guide gave us blessings by putting kumkuma, a powder made of turmeric and other ingredients, on our forehead. It’s a testament to the ingrained culture of hospitality that pervades every interaction in India, making visitors feel not just welcomed but cherished.

McDebut: First Bite of McDonald’s in India

Between visiting the two companies, we got lunch at a McDonald’s. The menu gives us insight into local’s eating habits and taste. In India, the absence of beef-based products resonates with the sanctity given to cows in Indian society. In Hindu belief, the cow is a symbol of life and abundance, because it has been integral to agricultural practices, transportation, and even spiritual rituals. Instead of beef, one discovers a plethora of chicken options.

We also find McVeggie and other vegetarian options. This is because India has a significant population of followers of other religions such as Jainism and Buddhism, which also advocate for vegetarianism and emphasize compassion towards animals. In Jainism, the principle of ahimsa, or non-violence, extends to all living beings, making vegetarianism a common dietary practice among Jains. Similarly, Buddhism promotes a diet that avoids harming animals, thus many Buddhists in India are also vegetarian.

Another observation is that McDonald’s in India does not serve pork. They refrain from serving pork due to religious and cultural considerations. Pork is prohibited in Islam and is also avoided by certain Hindu and Sikh communities in India. Given that India is a multicultural and multi-religious society, McDonald’s respects the dietary preferences and religious beliefs of its diverse customer base by offering a menu that caters to a predominantly non-pork eating population.

Lastly, McDonald’s serves McSpicy to cater to a population that enjoys spicy food. One can also get spicy fries by mixing Peri Peri seasoning with fries, reflecting India’s penchant for bold flavors.

Organized Chaos on Indian Roads

At the heart of Indian culture lies the juxtaposition of order and chaos, a paradoxical harmony that defines the nation’s ethos. In India, one must embrace the notion that amidst apparent disorder lies a deeper sense of interconnectedness and rhythm. It’s a lesson in surrendering to the flow of life, relinquishing the need for absolute control and instead, embracing the spontaneity and vibrancy that characterize Indian society.

This is apparent on Indian roads. Navigating through the city in a tour-sized bus presents its own set of challenges, as every corner teems with activity and unpredictability. From dodging traffic to negotiating narrow lanes, each moment is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of both locals and visitors alike.

A particularly memorable incident exemplifies the communal spirit that permeates Indian society. When our bus found itself obstructed by a poorly parked car, it was not just the responsibility of the driver to resolve the issue. Instead, a collective effort ensued, with everyone from tuk-tuk drivers to pedestrians joining forces to locate the errant vehicle’s owner. The eventual resolution was met with applause, highlighting the sense of camaraderie that transcends boundaries in India.
