My family and I migrated to the United States when I had just become a teenager. I moved to this country, barely speaking the English language and with an introverted personality. These two factors combined to make my first few years in America burdensome and my assimilation process very challenging. It was not until the early years of high school that I sensed the hurdles in my life starting to fade away. After some reflection, I realized that the key to my success, both as a student and in my personal life, was the improvements that I’d made to my knowledge of English. More specifically, writing was the main cause of my growth.
Being an introvert and barely speaking English, I had to rely heavily on writing in order to communicate. At first, I had no choice but to depend on my abilities as a writer. However, as time went on, I started gaining a sense of enjoyment from writing and I started writing more; this time not because I had to, but because I wanted to.
My senior year of high school, I was approached by the head of the school’s language department wondering if I knew how to speak Farsi. Being born in Iran, Farsi is my first language so I told her that I did. She then proceeded to inform me that there was a student who had just migrated to the United States. This particular student knew very little English and was having difficulties keeping up with his school work. The department head was wondering if I’d be able to translate for, and tutor, the student. After some contemplating, I realized that the situation he was in was exactly like what I had experienced just years earlier. As soon as I came to that realization, I jumped on the opportunity to help him as I wanted to be for him what nobody was for me. I went into that experience not sure what to expect, but I came out of it with a huge sense of fulfilment.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve found enjoyment in assisting those around me in any way that I possibly can. Being a Peer Consultant at the WaCC allows me to do just that. I am able to use the medium of writing to connect with students and go through a process which makes everyone involved better writers, including myself. Furthermore, I am able to connect with those of my peers who are more introverted like myself. It is an absolute pleasure to help them be able to express themselves through their writing. I look forward to working with my peers to achieve a common goal: becoming a better writer.
