Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., & Black History Month 2021
Dr. King was an American Baptist minister and activist who became one of the most visible leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was made a federal holiday in 1983, encouraging individuals to take “a day on, not a day off.”
Black History Month is celebrated every February as an homage to the achievements of African Americans who have shaped American history. The idea for a way to celebrate African American achievements started in 1915 by historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African American figures of his day. Black History Month was officially recognized in 1976.
Achieving Community Transformation (ACT) under the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research and the UW Bothell/Cascadia MLK Planning Committee have worked together to plan this year's events.
