BOTHELL, Wash. – Streaming live over the Internet, UWave radio will broadcast student produced content from UW Bothell. On June 5 students will “flip the switch,” and air their inaugural broadcast at the UWave launch party, held under the sun on the campus promenade.

“UWave is a campus/community radio station, and a collaboration between UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College students, faculty, staff, and alumni,” says Dr. Amoshaun Toft, UWave faculty advisor. “This launch represents more than two years of organizing work, from working on copyright clearances, to mobilizing a space for student publications, securing grant, and agreements with the IT department. All of this has been driven by UW Bothell students, and I am terribly proud of what they have accomplished.”

Paul Kim, an undergraduate in the media and communications program and the station’s general manager, hosts UWave’s Underground Hip-Hop program. “We want to bring recognition to Seattle artists as well as create a platform for student artists to advance their careers,” explains Kim, “I’m constantly surprised at how many artists we have here on campus.”

The students are laying the foundation for FM broadcasting. In October 2013, the FCC is opening a rare license application window for large urban areas like Seattle. A handful of 100 watt low-power FM (LPFM) licenses will be available.

UWave is busy securing the start-up costs and 24-hour programming needed for FCC licensing. “We are sticking to what we envisioned two years ago, UWave creating an even stronger sense of community through radio journalism and music,” says Harmony Gonty, host of UWave’s electronic music show The Beat. Gonty graduated from UW Bothell in 2012 and shares eight years of radio experience with UWave.
