Global Scholars Program

UW Bothell Global Scholars

  • What does it mean to be a global citizen?
  • How do issues that affect your community influence the rest of the world?
  • How can you gain an immersive global experience that is integrated with your  education?

The Global Scholars Program brings together UW Bothell students from diverse backgrounds, particularly first-generation college students, to explore issues of diversity, difference, and identity as central to all global engagements. Students selected for the program participate in a year-long experience that encourages critical reflection and exploration in a supportive community of fellow students with shared interests. A team of program directors provide guidance and mentorship.

Engagement begins during Winter quarter with a series of workshops. Class activities during Spring and Autumn quarters are paired with an immersive study abroad or internship program during the summer. At the end of the year-long program, Global Scholars are recognized for their commitment and achievements as leaders with the ability to ethically engage with different cultural perspectives in the larger global community. Students in the program can leverage their involvement with and status as Global Scholars to become more competitive in getting into a major or pursuing leadership/ employment opportunities.

"I was a Global Scholar during the inaugural year of the program, while in my first and second year at UWB. Being in the program so early pushed me to accomplish my goals earlier than I had planned. Embarking on a global experience as a first-year student was not a disadvantage like I had previously thought, but instead was a strength because I gained skills during my global experience that gave me the confidence to be involved in other high-impact opportunities around campus and take harder classes. I realized that despite being younger than my peers, I still had plenty to offer.

The Global Scholars team supported me inside and outside of the class and after my graduation from the cohort: I became the first UWB McNair Scholar, have an on-campus position as Program and Research Assistant, and am applying to postgraduate opportunities. The Global Scholars Program is a unique experience that offers support not found in traditional classroom settings and has been the highlight of my college career. "
