About upcoming deadlines
Merit Scholarships deadline are usually posted at least a month in advance to give you plenty of time to prepare your application. The below list of scholarships are just a sample of upcoming scholarships. Please look in the UW scholarship database for a much more extensive list.
- Students will spend a year immersed in an international community of thinkers, innovators and senior leaders in business, politics and society.
- Scholars experience a master's degree program at Tsinghua University, one of China’s leading universities. The curriculum bridges the academic and professional worlds to educate students about leadership and about China's expanding role in the world.
- Scholars receive the following:
- Tuition, related fees and required course books and supplies
- Room and board
- Travel to and from Beijing at the beginning and end of the academic year
- An in-country study tour
- Lenovo laptop and smartphone
- Health insurance
- A modest personal stipend
- Applicants must have a completed undergraduate degree, or must complete it before the orientation begins in July 2017 and between the ages of 18-28 as of June 30,2016

- German Chancellor Scholarships are awarded to prospective leaders under 35 years of age from the U.S. in academic, economic and political fields, to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany. During one-year research stays, scholars are also given an opportunity to gain an insight into the social, cultural, economic and political situation in Germany.
- Applicants must be nationals of the U.S, Russia, China, Brazil, or India with a completed Bachelor’s degree and knowledge of either English or German language.
- National Deadline: September 15, 2016
- Post-graduate opportunity, funded by the US Department of State, to spend a year abroad doing research, graduate studies, or teach English in over 155 countries worldwide.
- Applicants must be US citizens in good health who will have completed a Bachelor's degree by the start of the grant. They must have a high level of academic or professional achievement, demonstrated leadership ability, and a well-designed project proposal. Foreign language proficiency may be required.

- Provides fully-funded year-long placements in Asia, including stipends, language training, and tailored work assignment, for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia.
- Applicants must be US citizens under 30, in good health, who will have completed a Bachelor's degree by the start of the grant.
- UW Application Deadline: September 7, 2016
- Two-year leadership development program, sponsored by the federal Office of Personnel Management, for top students interested in government service. Program combines paid work assignments with classroom training and development opportunities.
- Applicants must be US citizens or in the process of obtaining US citizenship who will complete their advanced degree program by the end of August 2017.
- Deadline: mid-September 2016
- Funded by US Congress, the Gilman program aims to bring diversity to study abroad
- Non-traditional destinations are preferred and programs must be at least four weeks
- Applicants must be US citizens, undergraduates, and be receiving a Federal Pell Grant
- Deadline: October 15, 2016
- The National Science Foundation funds three years of financial support over a five-year period, including a $30,000 annual stipend and a $12,000 annual cost-of-education allowance.
- Applicants must be graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as psychology and the social sciences.
- Applicants must be US citizens, nationals or permanent residents, enrolled in a research-focused Master’s or Ph.D. program that is supported by the NFS by Fall 2017 and have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of August 1, 2016.
- Deadlines: Vary with grant from October 24, 2016 - November 3, 2016
- Up to $30,000 in funding and professional development opportunities for students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Named after President Truman, the scholarship recognizes outstanding leadership potential, academic achievement, and the desire to pursue a career in public service.
- Applicants must be US nationals, in their junior year, with a strong record of public service and a minimum 3.3 GPA.
- Campus Deadline: November, 2016. National Deadline: February, 2017
- Merit-based essay contest scholarship that awards 3 individuals with $1,000, sponsored by Growing Generations
- Growing Generations provides surrogacy and egg donation services within the U.S. to clients from around the world. Their services allow for gay and straight couples, as well as single men and women, who cannot produce viable eggs and/or carry their own pregnancy, to have children.
- Applicants must be U.S residents, enrolled full-time as an Undergraduate or Graduate student and have a minimum GPA of a 3.5 or higher.
- Deadline: December 31, 2016
- Up to $5,000 for students whose career interests fall into one of the following categories: the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care.
- Applicants must be sophomores or juniors, US citizens or permanent residents, with at least a B average.
- Nomination by UW required.
- Anticipated National Deadline: January 3, 2017
