Washington State Residency

Washington State residency guidelines are established by legislation.

In order for University of Washington students to be considered residents for tuition purposes, they first must be able to prove that they are U.S. citizens, have U.S. permanent resident cards, or have a qualifying visa.

To be classified or reclassified as residents, for tuition and fee purposes, students must establish a bona fide domicile in the state of Washington primarily for purposes other than education for the period of one year immediately prior to classification as residents.

Please consult the University of Washington Residency Office web site for complete information on how to apply for Washington State residency.

Eligible students may use the Tuition Exemption program to enroll in BPOLST (Policy Studies) and BCULST (Cultural Studies) elective courses on a space‐available basis, but may not use the program to enroll in any of the following core courses, directed research, or internships: BCULST 500, 501, 502, 510, 511, 512, 520, 598, 599.
