End of Spring Party

Celebrate the end of the Spring quarter, the school year, and the beginning of summer by joining your CSS friends for some food, fun, and a great time. The ACM will be hosting this event right after the Spring Colloquium. Delicious food will be provided so some hungry!
The event will be held from 3:30pm to 5:30pm in UW1's Lower Level Vista.
Inside the Video Game Industry
June 2, 2009 -- Join us for a special lecture by Jason Bay, head of programming at Gripptonite, as he exposes the inside world of the video game industry. A jack of all trades, Jason has served as Lead Tester, Designer/Writer, Programmer and Lead Programmer within multiple game companies. A significant portion of this lecture will be reserved for Q&A with the audience.
The event will start at 5:50pm in the Cascadia building (CC1-011).
Profs. Sung and Stiber Promoted
May 11, 2009 -- Professors Kelvin Sung and Michael Stiber have been promoted from Associate Professor to full Professor of Computing and Software Systems by UW President Mark Emmert, effective September 2009. This promotion recognizes both of their accomplishments in research, teaching, and institution building. It also represents the CSS Program's growing success and maturity as the founding UW Bothell technology degree. Congratulations to Profs. Sung and Stiber and thanks to all of the CSS faculty and staff who helped this process run so well!

April 26, 2009 -- Professor Sung will organize the workshop, "XNA Game-Themed Applications for Teaching Introductory Programming Courses," at the Fourth International Conference on the Foundations of Digital Games in Orlando, Florida.

CSS Faculty at SIGCSE
March 4, 2009 -- Professor Carol Zander and Kelvin Sung attended the annual SIGCSE (Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education) meeting, presenting a paper and organizing a panel. Professor Zander presented the paper, "CS1 Students Speak: Advice for Students by Students", co-authored with Brian Hanks, Laurie Murphy, Beth Simon, and Renée McCauley. Professor Sung organized the panel,"Introductory Programming Courses and Computer Games" with M. Lewis, S. Leutenegger, and M. Panitz.

January 30, 2009 -- Professor Kelvin Sung is invited to talk about "Top-Down Approach to Teaching Computer Graphics and Game Development," for the Institute of Technology Seminar at UW Tacoma.
Prof. Olson Guest Lecturer at UW Seattle
January 29, 2009 -- Professor Clark Olson will be giving a lecture at UW Seattle on January 29th titled 'Computer Vision for Mars Exploration'. Professor Olson has worked with NASA's JPL laboratories for several years on researching and improving computer vision techniques for the Mars Rovers.

Prof. Zander Named 'Invited Reviewer'
October 1, 2008 -- The SIGCSE (Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education) provides a forum for educators to discuss issues related to the development, implementation, and/or evaluation of computing programs, curricula, and courses, as well as syllabi, laboratories, and other elements of teaching and pedagogy. CSS Professor Carol Zander has been invited to the 2009 SIGCSE Symposium as a reviewer for the first video exhibition the Symposium has had. This venue will allow Computer Science Educators to exhibit video artifacts relevant to computer science education
Prof. Olson on Sabbatical
September 24, 2008 -- Dr. Clark Olson is on sabbatical for the 08-09 academic year. During his leave, Dr. Olson will be collaborating with researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) on computer vision research. JPL has been developing a system for aerial mapping and recognition using multiple high-resolution cameras. Dr. Olson's research helps make it possible to construct three-dimensional maps and to perform recognition and tracking in the images. The results of this joint research venture will impact many various fields including geographical information systems, environmental management, consumer mapping websites, and aerial surveillance.
Prof. Fukuda on Sabbatical
September 24, 2008 -- Dr. Munehiro Fukuda is visiting four research organizations in Portugal, Japan, Switzerland, and the United States in order to pursue two research goals: parallelizing various applications on top of his grid-computing middleware named AgentTeamwork and to explore new collaborative research projects on software environments that support multi-core processors. At Lisbon, Dr. Fukuda enabled an online war game to run its different strategic scenarios in parallel. At Keio University in Japan, he is parallelizing the data search and analyzing components of his collaborators' multimedia database system, currently shaping and idea to offload such data analysis of a serve onto multi-core clients. Dr. Fukuda will continue his work in this field by visiting a mobile-agent research team at the University of California, Irvine in April.
CSS Names New Director
September 1, 2008 -- Dr. Michael Stiber, Professor in the Computing & Software Systems Program (CSS) at UW Bothell has accepted the position of Director of the CSS Program. Dr. Stiber has served as Associate Professor in CSS since 1997. His research areas focus on the intersection of Biology and Computer Science, investigating how biological systems can perform everyday computations. As the new academic year begins, Dr. Stiber will lead CSS in its involvement with the 21st Campus Initiative, creation of a new Science and Technology Program and many more changes to come as the UW Bothell campus continues its innovative development.
Dina Meske elected to UW Professional Staff Organization
June 2008 -- Dina Meske was elected to the UW Professional Staff Organization, which represents more than 7,400 professional staff at the UW. The PSO's goals are to represent the issues and concerns of professional staff to the university community and the legislature, to disseminate information and enhance communication and understanding among professional staff, and to foster professionalism and encourage professional development.
