University of Washington Bothell mechanical engineering students Matthew Munson and Spencer Nelson experienced ocean engineering firsthand on a cruise aboard a research ship this summer off the Northwest coast.

The University of Washington Bothell is helping develop a disinfectant to reduce the foul odor of latrines. Making pit toilets less offensive could improve sanitation in developing regions of the world where defecation in the open air spreads disease. 

UW Bothell faculty Jeff Jensen and Rob Turner and their students are working on a project to return once-plentiful kokanee salmon to Lyon Creek in Lake Forest Park. Jensen is using a remote site egg incubator, and Turner is monitoring the water quality of storm runoff.

Cindy Shirley, the director of University of Washington Bothell’s Office of Research, also is crew chief for the Miss HomeStreet unlimited hydroplane. Shirley showed off the boat on Seattle’s Seafair weekend to undergraduates in UW Bothell’s math and engineering research experience program.
