A new study from University of Washington researchers that analyzed the security hygiene of common, open-source DNA processing programs finds evidence of poor computer security practices used throughout the field and that it is possible to remotely compromise a computer using information stored in DNA. Read UW News article.

2017 June 02: SeaGlass-UW Researchers use ridesharing cars to sniff out a secret spying tool. 2017 May 25: From the CISOs Office: a message about phishing. Cyber criminals try to trick you into disclosing your login credentials, passwords or other personal data by sending email messages that create a sense of urgency. Be wary of any email that threatens negative consequences if you do not click on a link to login with your user name (e.g., UW NetID) and password. Read message.

2016 November 21: Batman’s Kitchen teaches UW students how to play cybersecurity. Batman’s Kitchen is a student-driven security hacker competition group that involves around 700 current students and alumni from the three UW campuses. Read UW news article.

2016 November 15: Cybercrime-fighters of Batman’s Kitchen cook up a 3rd place finish at CSAW 2016. Batman’s Kitchen became cybersecurity superheroes when they earned third place at the U.S. finals of Capture-the-Flag at Cyber Security Awareness Week. Read full article.

2014 October 1-3: University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) Western Regional Awards: Information Security and Risk Management Certificate course was acknowledge for preparing students in cybersecurity education. Students are taught to examine and craft effective policies for mitigating risks, and learn how to implement security and remediation measures across an entire organization. Read full article.


2014 May 6: Barbara Endicott-Popovsky participated in National Security Forum. Research Associate Professor Barbara Endicott-Popovsky participated in the National Security Forum (NSF) held May 6-8 at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. "It is a great honor to have been nominated by the Washington National Guard and accepted by the NSF to serve as the cybersecurity expert," said Endicott-Popovsky. Read full article.


2014 April 16: CIAC ranks in the top ten for Cybersecurity education.  A  Ponemon Institute Reports UW is in the Top Universities to Study Cybersecurity. Ponemon Institute conducts independent research on privacy, data protection, and information security policy. Their goal is to enable organizations to have a clearer understanding of the trends in practices, perceptions, and potential threats that will affect the collection, management and safeguarding of personal and confidential information about individuals and organizations. Read full article.

2013 March 25: The UW-Tacoma branch is introducing a new graduate program in cybersecurity space.
