Small Group Instructional Diagnostic (SGID)



The Small Group Instructional Diagnostic (SGID) is a formative assessment technique used to obtain anonymous, mid-quarter feedback from your students about your class. A trained facilitator assists you in creating questions that you would like to ask your students. The facilitator then visits your class for thirty minutes while you leave the room, and collects anonymous answers to your questions. The facilitator compiles the feedback into a confidential report for you and schedules a follow-up meeting to discuss the report. This provides you with an opportunity to go back to your students to reinforce your class learning goals while addressing student concerns. Hear what your students think of your course before the last day of class!

SGIDs will be done prior to Week Seven of the quarter and will be limited to one per faculty member per quarter.


A faculty member who would like to have an SGID done will submit a request, at least two weeks in advance, using the online request form.


Once a request has been received, the TLC Program Coordinator will forward the request to the facilitators asking if anyone is available to perform the SGID.


The assigned facilitator will contact the faculty requesting the SGID to set up a time to meet and discuss questions and information the faculty member would like to receive. Once a date has been agreed upon, the facilitator will conduct the SGID and then schedule a follow-up with the faculty member to discuss the results.

The TLC Program Coordinator is to be included in all correspondence between the facilitator and faculty member. When the SGID has been completed, the facilitator will notify the TLC Program Coordinator who will enter the information into a tracking spreadsheet, and credit the facilitator with a small amount of funding that can be used toward travel or supplies.

Faculty Consultations

An individual faculty member can contact the TLC with a specific concern or pedagogical challenge. In consultation with the faculty member, the TLC will create a team of staff and other faculty from the appropriate academic, administrative, and student support units who will collaborate with the faculty member to address his or her individual needs.
