UW Bothell to Welcome Largest Faculty Class in its History

Twenty-nine new faculty are expected to join UW Bothell for the 2013-14 academic year. The incoming group is the largest single faculty class in the history of the university, according to Peggy Frazier, faculty affairs director at UW Bothell.
The increase in faculty hires is attributed to the growth in student enrollment, along with an expansion of degree programs at the university.
Eleven of the new hires will teach in the new School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which was approved by the University of Washington Board of Regents in March.
In the School of STEM, there are new degrees debuting this fall in cybersecurity (M.S.), mathematics (B.S.) and interactive media design (B.A.). Degrees in chemistry, computer engineering and mechanical engineering will be offered in the fall of 2014.
Four faculty positions are being added to the Nursing and Health Studies program, which will offer a new degree in health studies (B.A.) this fall.
The remaining faculty positions will be distributed throughout the university's School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and the School of Business.
UW Bothell currently enrolls more than 4,100 students. The university offers 23 undergraduate and 11 graduate degree programs.

Rebecca Aanerud
Senior Lecturer, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. Aanerud joins UW Bothell from the University of Washington where she was a Senior Lecturer in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. At the University of Washington she earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in English, completing in 1998. Her research interests include critical race studies, whiteness studies, feminist pedagogy, feminist wisdom studies, and cultural studies.
Peter Anderson, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of STEM, Bio-Chem. Anderson joins UW Bothell from Sandia National Laboratories where he was a Post-doctoral Associate Computational Chemist/Cheminformatics Scientist. He received his Ph.D. in Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007. His research interests include De novo design of enzymes and protein receptors, modeling of molecular recognition in proteins, modeling of protein dynamics and function, and machine learning methods in drug discovery and molecular recognition.
Laurie Anderson
Senior Lecturer, School of STEM, CSS. Anderson has taught at UW Bothell as a part time lecturer in Computing and Software Systems. She earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in Cultural Ecology and a Specialization in Spiritual Ecology from Union Institute and University, completing in 2004.
Camelia Bejan, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Business, Economics. Bejan joins UW Bothell from Rice University, where she was an Assistant Professor of Economics. She received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 2005, and an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Bucharest, Romania in 1993. Her research interests include Microeconomic Theory, financial economics, mathematical economics, and Game Theory.
Aeron Bergman
Senior Lecturer/Artist in Residence, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Visual Arts. Bergman joins UW Bothell from the Oslo National Academy of Fine Art where he was a Professor in the BFA and MFA programs. He earned an MFA from New York University in 1999, and an MA in Art History from the University of Toronto in 1996.
Lauren Berliner, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Media Production, Participatory Media. Berliner joins UW Bothell from the University of California, San Diego, where she received her Ph.D. in Communication in 2013. She received an M.A. in Visual and Media Art from Emerson College in 2005. Her research interests include discourses of youth digital media empowerment in relation to the institutional structures and intersubjective dynamics that are shaping contemporary youth media productions.
Amaranth Borsuk, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Creative Writing and Poetics. Borsuk has taught at UW Bothell as a Lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. At the University of Southern California she received her Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing in 2010, and an M.A. in English Literature in 2006. Her research interests include the intersection print and digital media, the history and future of the book, and the relationship between writers and technologies of inscription.
Charles Collins, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Community Psychology. Collins joins UW Bothell from Michigan State University where he received his Ph.D. in Ecological Community Psychology. He received an M.A. in Psychological Science from California State University, Chico, in 2008. His research interests include community organizations, multilevel theory, community organizing, social networks, and community transformation.
Butch de Castro, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Nursing and Health Studies. de Castro joins UW Bothell from the University of Washington School Of Nursing, where he was an Associate Professor, and Director of the Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing Program. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2003, and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Illinois Public Health Research Fellowship Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health. His primary research interests include occupational health issues among immigrant and minority worker populations with an emphasis on how psychosocial aspects of work affect physical and mental health, and how workplace safety and health hazards encountered by nurses and other health care workers contribute to work-related injury and illness.
Rajib Doogar, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, School of Business, Accounting. Doogar joins UW Bothell from the University of Illinois, where he was an Assistant Professor. He received a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1994, and an LL.B. from Calcutta University in 1984. His research interests include audit markets, financial reporting, and contracting.
Sarah Dowling, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Creative Writing and Poetics. Dowling has taught at UW Bothell as a lecturer in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania along with graduate certificates in Gender, Sexuality and Women Studies, and College and University Teaching in 2010. She received an M.A. in English/Creative Writing from Temple University in 2006. Her research interests include modern and contemporary literature, gender and sexuality studies, ethnic studies, creative writing, and poetics.
Mahmoud Ghofrani
Assistant Professor, School of STEM, Electrical Engineering. Ghofrani joins UW Bothell from the University of Nevada Reno where he earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, completing in 2013. His research interests include design and simulation of transformers, simulation and control of electric drives, power system operation and planning, energy management systems and demand response programs, electric and hybrid electrical Vehicle applications, among others, renewable and clean energy systems, large scale integration of wind power generation, smart grid applications, energy storage applications, and power market.
Nora Kenworthy, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Nursing and Health Studies. Kenworthy joins UW Bothell from Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health where she received her Ph.D. in Sociomedical Sciences in 2013, and an M.A. and M.Phil. from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociomedical Sciences in 2010. Her research focuses on the politics of health care access, and how health-promoting institutions alter political systems and citizenship, in the United States and in Southern Africa.
Brent Lagesse, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of STEM, CSS. Lagesse joins UW Bothell from BBN Technologies where he was a Research Scientist. At the University of Texas at Arlington, he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2009, and an M.S. in Computer Science in 2006. His research interests include cyber security and pervasive systems, particularly securing systems that operate in untrustworthy and hostile environments.
Danielle Lee, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of STEM, CSS. Lee joins UW Bothell from the University of Pittsburgh where she received her Ph.D. in Information Science in 2012; she received her M.S. in Telecommunication and Network Management from Syracuse University in 2001. Her research interests include patterns of users’ online social interactions and information propagation, personalized recommendations of interesting information using users’ various online social networks, recommendation of social connections, knowledge mining of collective intelligence, and exploratory comparison of publication index with social tags.
Lauren Lichty, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Community Psychology. Lichty joins UW Bothell from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, College of Education, Center for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment, where she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate. At Michigan State University she received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Ecological-Community, completing in 2010. Her research interests include process and impact of community-based research, Photovoice and Photovoice adaptations, ecological and systems theories, health and educational disparities, youth empowerment, youth led social change, and risk/protective factors associated with youth development.
Casey Mann, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, School of STEM, Math. Mann joins UW Bothell from the University of Texas at Tyler, Department of Mathematics, where he was an Associate Professor. At the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville he earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics, completing in 2001. His research interests include tiling theory, knot theory, and discrete geometry.
Minda Martin, MFA
Associate Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. Martin joins UW Bothell from California State University, San Marcos where she was an Associate Professor. She received her M.F.A. in Film and Video from the California Institute of the Arts. She writes and directs experimental documentary and narrative films that explore the underpinnings and disparities of social class in America.
Jennifer McLoud-Mann, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, School of STEM, Math. McLoud-Mann joins UW Bothell from the University of Texas where she was an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. At the University of Arkansas, she received an M.S. and Ph.D. in Commutative Algebra, completing in 2002. Her research interests include commutative algebra and knot theory.
Pierre Mourad
Associate Professor, School of STEM, Mechanical Engineering. Mourad joins UW Bothell from the University of Washington Department of Neurological Surgery where he was an Associate Professor and Principal Physicist at the Applied Physics Lab. At the University of Washington he earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, completing in 1987. His research interests include biomedical physics, especially acoustics and emergently, diagnostic electromagnetic radiation, focused primarily on applications to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. He has generated more than twenty invention disclosures at the University of Washington and is an inventor on three issued patents and another thirteen patent applications, all having to do with means of diagnosing or treating various diseases and disorders
Yolanda Padilla, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Visual Arts. Padilla joins UW Bothell from University of Minnesota where she was a Diversity Postdoctoral Fellow. At the University of Chicago she earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in English, completing in 2004. Her research interests include examining the ways in which early twentieth-century Mexican Americans understood the local specificities of their experiences in the United States in the larger context of cultural and political relations between the U.S. and Mexico, theories of race and subject formation, border studies, and the study of race, gender, and sexuality in the Americas.
Lori Robins, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of STEM, Bio-Chem. Robins joins UW Bothell from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California Davis in 2007, and held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Duke University, Department of Biochemistry. Her research interests include Enzyme Inhibition: small molecule inhibitor design, combinatorial methods – synthesis of target compounds, inhibitor assay development and screening of potential inhibitors, kinetic analysis of identified enzyme inhibitors; acid tolerant enzymes – characterization/identification: UV-Vis based assay development, substrate identification, and kinetic analysis.
Alejandra Salinas
Senior Lecturer/Artist in Residence, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Visual Arts. Salinas joins UW Bothell from the Umea Academy of Fine Art, Sweden, where she was a Visiting Associate Professor. She earned her MFA from the Valand School of Fine Art at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden in 2008.
Andrea Stone, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Nursing and Health Studies. Stone has taught at UW Bothell as a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and the Master of the Art of Policy Studies (MAPS) program, and was the Prevention Epidemiology Research Manager for the Washington State Health and Recovery Services Administration. She received her Ph.D. in Public Health (Psychiatric Epidemiology with specialization in Drug Dependence) from Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2005. Her recent research investigates the initiation of substance use by youth in the Developmental Pathways Project.
Geethapriya Thamilarasu, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of STEM, CSS. Thamilarasu joins UW Bothell from SUNY Institute of Technology, Utica/Rome where she was an Assistant Professor and Director of the Wireless Sensor Networking and Security (WiSNetS) Research Lab. At the State University of New York at Buffalo she earned an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering, completing in 2009. Her research interests include wireless ad hoc and sensor networks with special emphasis on security issues and cross-layer designs.
Muralidhara Thimmaiah
Senior Lecturer, School of STEM, Chemistry. Thimmaiah joins UW Bothell from SRM University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Faculty of Engineering and Technology where he was an Assistant Professor (Senior Grad). He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Michigan Technological University in 2008, and an M.S. in Chemistry at Bangalore University in 1987.
Amoshaun Toft, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Media Production, Participatory Media. Toft has taught at UW Bothell as a Lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. At the University of Washington he received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication, completing in 2010. His research interests include participatory media, journalism and media studies, discourse and language, technology and society, collaboration and community-engagement, organizational communication, network studies, political communication, social movements, poverty and homelessness.
Xiahua (Anny) Wei, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Business, Economics. Wei joins UW Bothell from the University of California, San Diego where she received her Ph.D. in Economics in 2013. She received an M.S. in Management and an M.A. in Economics from the University of California, Irvine in 2006. Her research interests include industrial organization, applied microeconomics, economics of ITT, technology management, innovation strategy, and Marketing.
Mayumi Willgerodt, Ph.D.
Professor, Nursing and Health Studies. Willgerodt joins UW Bothell from the University of Washington School of Nursing, Department of Family and Child Nursing where she was an Associate Professor. She received her Ph.D. in Nursing Sciences from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1999, where she also received her MPH in Community Health Sciences and MS in Nursing in 1995. Her current research focus is the utilization of existent technologies to develop research capacity within underserved communities in order to enhance and improve research participation rates in Asian Pacific Islander communities. Dr. Willgerodt is also involved in school based health promotion research, with an emphasis on enhancing shared management approaches between parent and child to develop effective self-management skills to engage in healthy behaviors.
