Sarah Ramírez presents research on discourses of globalization in Latino film

IAS undergraduate student Sarah Ramírez presented her research at the UW Undergraduate Research Symposium. Her presentation, titled “Caught on Camera: Discourses of Globalization and Global Citizenship in Latino Film,” examined the ways that globalization and global citizenship are portrayed in Global South foreign films, and how the representations of Global South characters are much more complex and nuanced when they match the identity of the filmmaker. She argued that these nuanced representations of globalization, global citizenship, and identities can breed empathy in white westerners who watch them, and change how they engage with travel in the Global South.
